Hi-Fi Rush Music-Synced Animation

Shown at last week’s CEDEC 2023 presentation by Tango Gameworks game director John Johanas (@johnjohanas) and lead game designer Masaaki Yamada, below is an early prototype of Hi-Fi Rush’s music-synced gameplay.

At the conference the game picked up awards for both art and sound design.

The game was animated for 120BPM (beats-per-minute) at 60 frames per second and dynamically modified thereafter. Key poses hit on the beat (dark boxes in the image below).

This later translated into the final results you can see below, where all elements were matched to the BPM and could be sped up and down in sync.
